The Church Must Rise

Reviewed by Marcus Thornton

Bill Vincent’s The Church Must Rise is not a comfortable read, and that is precisely why it is necessary. In a time when many pulpits have softened their message and many believers have grown complacent, this book sounds a clarion call to wake up. Transcribed from a sermon series, it carries the raw urgency of a pastor who loves the church enough to tell the truth-even when the truth is hard to hear.

Vincent tackles subjects that many avoid: the spirit of fear that has paralyzed our culture, the confusion that has infiltrated both politics and religion, the frustration that wears down even the most faithful, and the infiltration of demonic influences into places that should be holy ground. He does not shy away from controversial topics, yet he does so with a pastor’s heart, balancing boldness with a genuine desire to see people set free.

What struck me most was the emphasis on awareness. Vincent argues persuasively that a church that is ready is a church that is aware-aware of the enemy’s schemes, aware of God’s moving, and aware of the times we live in. He calls for discipline, for discernment, and for a return to preaching the whole counsel of God rather than a watered-down message designed to please everyone.

The book is not without its challenging moments. Some readers may find certain passages uncomfortable, particularly those addressing cultural issues and sexual sin. But Vincent writes with conviction, grounding his arguments in Scripture and in a deep concern for the spiritual condition of both the church and the world. He reminds us that there is a difference between loving everybody and loving everybody’s demons.

The Church Must Rise is a timely and necessary message for the body of Christ. It will challenge you, convict you, and ultimately inspire you to rise up and be the church you are called to be. If you are tired of business as usual and hungry for a genuine move of God, this book will stir your spirit and equip you for the battle ahead.
