About The Author
Beatrix Potter
Beatrix Potter (1866-1943) was an English author, illustrator, natural scientist and conservationist best known for her children’s books featuring anthropomorphic animals. Born into a privileged Unitarian family, Potter was educated by governesses and privately studied art, natural history and languages. Her most famous creation, Peter Rabbit, first appeared in The Tale of Peter Rabbit in 1902, and was followed by numerous other beloved tales such as The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny and The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck. Potter’s keen observation of the natural world and her charming watercolour illustrations brought her stories to life, captivating generations of readers. In addition to her writing and illustrating, Potter was a shrewd businesswoman, patenting a Peter Rabbit doll in 1903, and was also deeply involved in land preservation in the Lake District. She left nearly all her property to the National Trust, ensuring that the landscapes that inspired her stories would be protected for future generations.
