Summary

You’ll never believe what’s inside people’s heads! This humorous and heartwarming collection of stories from a neurosurgeon reminds us all that life is hopeful, tender-and a little bit squishy.

What They're Saying

Critics Review

“Barbara Lazio’s storytelling is beautifully balanced: tender and funny, wise and self-deprecating, familiar-feeling even as she leads us down unexpected paths to unravel complex medical challenges. Offering a rare glimpse inside the creative mind of a fixer of brains, Off the Top of My Head will appeal to physicians and physicians-to-be–and to patients and patients-to-be, as every one of us surely is, just biding our time until the vulnerabilities of our all-too-human bodies humble us once again and we go in search of a thoughtful healer like Dr. Lazio.” – Rebecca N. Thompson, MD, author of Held Together: A Shared Memoir of Motherhood, Medicine, and Imperfect Love
“As a neurosurgeon, I can tell you: This is the side of medicine people rarely see. Honest, human, and at times unexpectedly funny, these stories capture the weight and privilege of caring for patients on their hardest days. It’s a powerful reminder of why what we do matters.” – Betsy Grunch, MD, FAANS, FACS, FCNS
