About The Author
Aurelio Voltaire
Aurelio Voltaire is a multi-talented artist, known for his goth yet campy and self-aware style. Born in Havana and raised in New Jersey, Voltaire’s childhood fascination with horror movies evolved into a love for British rock bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, and the Cure. He began his career in stop-motion animation, working with TV networks including MTV, Nickelodeon, and Syfy, and taught at the School of Visual Arts from 1996 to 2019.
As a musician, Voltaire is a songwriter known for his murder ballads and macabre humor. His live shows, whether solo or with his skeletal orchestra, are filled with stories and games. He has been recording and touring for 20 years and has released 11 full-length albums.
He is also the author of the books Paint It Black: A Guide to Gothic Homemaking and What is Goth: Music, Makeup, Attitude, Apparel, Dance, and General Skullduggery.
Aurelio lives in the East Village surrounded by goth paraphernalia.
