Training for Transformation in Practice

Author: Anne Hope and Sally Timmel   Series: Training for Transformation

'Training for Transformation in Practice brings together the vivid personal accounts of how a particular method and approach transforms lives. The method combines creatively the "psycho-social" method of Paulo Freire with theories of personal and interpersonal development. The outcome is empowerment and liberation for people.' Dr Noel Bradley, Social Health Education Project, Cork, Republic of Ireland 'This volume re-fires popular and community educators with vivid depictions of experiences and methods to inspire new approaches to transforming inequalities. It invites thought-provoking and creative introspection while challenging practices of power. It shows why Training for Transformation has sustained popular educators around the world for over 40 years.' Shirley Walters, professor of adult and continuing education, University of Western Cape, South Africa 'Reading these rich and diverse stories, I am invited to decentralize my Western, male and middle-class point of view. This book helps me to make an ethical and spiritual assessment of my work as an educator and academic. I will keep it close.' Dr Dominiek Lootens, educator in pastoral care and counseling, Caritas, Belgium, and lecturer in spiritual leadership and organizational change at the Philosophisch-Theologische Hochschule in Vallendar, Germany. 'Training for Transformation is the most beautiful expression of development sector thinking I have ever encountered. It perfectly synthesizes principle and practice, and in so doing bypasses ideology. I believe that the enduring impact of Training for Transformation is because ordinary people recognize - and are inspired by - such a call to action.' Daryl McLean, development practitioner, South Africa

Training for Transformation in Practice brings together the experiences of 17 activists who have adapted these materials to their own social and cultural contexts. The book starts by describing the roots of Training for Transformation in people's struggles in the global South to gain political and economic independence and to overcome poverty.
