Description

"Andrew Crowe has produced a masterful synthesis of the remarkable voyaging history of the Polynesians." Prof Patrick V. Kirch, Chancellor's Professor Emeritus and Professor of the Graduate School at the University of California at Berkeley. This book casts light on a neglected epoch of world history, one that saw Polynesians expand their territory across the world's largest ocean. Author Andrew Crowe has been collecting the research of a wide range of specialists for many years, assembling it as if the individual findings were pieces of one enormous jigsaw. From this broad focus has come a deep admiration for the skills, resourcefulness and courage of the people that drove this extraordinary feat of maritime exploration. Pathway of the Birds is the most beautiful book I have ever held. The paper quality is first class allowing wonderful reproduction of the huge number of photographs. Every single page is a work of art and a wonderful example of graphic design. The written content is massively researched and presented in a superbly coherent manner. Then there is the lovely touch of the Chart of the Pacific on the back side of the dust cover. EVERYTHING is so well done. I couldn't put it done (read cover to cover) and have since been back many times since to reference discussion with others. It starts with the superb cover and keeps going from there.

Every NZ house should have one! Explains how the Maori/Polynesians navigated across the Pacific, found New Zealand, made return voyages. He brings together multiple sources of information from navigation chants to the DNA of lice on the rats. The book reads as a story of exploration, with beautiful illustrations and lots of side bars for more information.
