Summary

In 2010 Andrea Gibson’s poetry was read by a state representative in lieu of morning prayer at the Utah State Legislature. In THE MADNESS VASE, her second book of poems, Gibson seizes us by the collar, hauls us inside some of her darkest moments, then releases us out the other side. The pieces in this collection delve intimately into the topics of family, war, sex, class, gender, and spirituality. They are a rally cry for action and a welcome mat at the door of heart’s most compassionate room.

What They're Saying

Critics Review

“If spoken word were professional boxing Andrea Gibson would be the light weight you don’t think much of until [they] knock you flat on your ass.”– The Denver Westword

“If spoken word were professional boxing Andrea Gibson would be the light weight you don’t think much of until she knocks you flat on your ass.”

-The Denver Westword

“Andrea Gibson is a truly American poet, or rather, she represents the America I want to live in. Beautiful, thoughtful and grounded, her poetry doesn’t just give us an honest look at who we are today – as a country and as a people-but also lights a candle to lead us where we need to go.”

-Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz, 2011 National Endowment for the Arts Fellow

“Gibson is among the nation’s most admired and emulated poets. Her verse is at once personal and political, feminist and universal, filled with incinerating verbs and metaphor, and delivered with gut punching urgency.”

-Metaphor Media

“Andrea Gibson’s poems are active Volcano. They burn away and rebirth… a creation story in every line. They remind us that the world will keep spinning if we just push a little. This book will make you PUSH!”

-Sonya Renee, National & International Poetry Slam Champion

About The Author

Andrea Gibson

My name is Andrea Gibson. I’m a spoken word poet who can’t stop quoting my therapist. I travel around the world speaking my poems out loud on stages. I am the Poet Laureate of Colorado. I write about love, mental health, and social justice. I am queer and non-binary and write poems about that too. I have published seven books and recorded seven albums and my books have won Independent Publishers Awards and been Good Reads Choice Awards finalists. I have three rescue dogs who boss me around. I cry in public at least once a week. I collect political t-shirts, panic attacks, and poems about the moon. In the end, I want my heart to be covered in stretch marks.
