Applied Linguistics in the Global South: Ethical Human Relations Within and Beyond the Academia emerges from conversations between scholars interested in discussing all the pains, crises, and difficulties on the path to establishing themselves in academia. Through these dialogues, this book creates a space in which applied linguists can exist, feel, relate, think, and research themselves as human, acknowledging bodies that suffer, are moved, co-construct, respect, and are guided by ethics beyond academic life. The editors believe that doing Applied Linguistics in the Global South requires translating words into practice, moving from naturalized epistemological writings to more context sensitive, collaborative ones. This volume encourages ethical human relations, and asks linguists to stand and humbly leave the comfort of their researcher’s desk, aware that they might learn much more than they expected from their own studies, from their students, and from their experiences.
"Applied Linguistics in the Global South stands out as a timely and important work that offers a unique perspective on applied linguistics by exploring the ethical implications of doing research in this region. Each chapter contributes to a rich tapestry of perspectives, making this book an invaluable resource for those seeking a nuanced understanding of linguistic research. It is a valuable contribution to the field, and essential reading for anyone interested in applied linguistics, language education, or ethical research practices."
-- Anabela V. Simões, University of Aveiro"This much needed volume centers applied linguistics as theory and method from a Global South perspective. The chapters in this book offer us valuable insights into how transformative change can be enacted through praxis. There is a raw, honest dimension to the work published here. The contributing authors look within themselves and engage in dialogue with their peers to forge a path forward, as they embrace complex identity work to tackle coloniality in language educational research."
-- Peter De Costa, Michigan State University"This volume offers fresh and provocative perspectives to foster more ethical and caring applied linguistics research practices. This is not just a book that scrutinizes the well-documented dynamics of privilege and social injustice within the field. By bringing together powerful voices from Brazil, this collection tells a novel narrative, one that invites us all, regardless of our socio-geographical provenance, to be authentic – raw and uncomfortable as this may seem. The authors of this collection teach us that through full acceptance and celebration of the Self and the Other, we may truly work together for more just, peaceful, and empowering practices for all within and beyond our academic disciplines."
