Ernest Mandel
Ernest Ezra Mandel (Frankfurt, April 5, 1923 – Brussels, July 20, 1995) was a German-born Marxist revolutionary and philosopher.
Due to the rise of Nazism in Germany, his parents, Henri and Rosa Mandel, who were Jewish emigrants from Poland, were forced to move to Belgium. There, a few years later, the young Ernest joined the Revolutionary Communist League (the Belgian section of the Fourth International). He completed his university studies, graduating from the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris in 1967. From then until his death in 1995, he engaged in intense political activity within the international Trotskyist movement, becoming one of its most prominent revolutionary leaders and theorists worldwide.
Many of his academic articles were published under pseudonyms until the publication of his book The Marxist Economic Theory in France in 1962. This marked his recognition not only as a political figure but also as a Marxist thinker and theorist beyond the French-Belgian borders. A polyglot and tireless researcher, throughout his life he published around 2,000 articles and nearly 30 books in German, Dutch, French, and English, which were subsequently translated into numerous languages.
The core of his theoretical work is fundamentally based on a non-dogmatic and humanistic reappropriation of the main postulates of the works of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. This is evident in works such as The Marxist Economic Theory (France, 1962), The Formation of the Economic Thought of Karl Marx (1968), and his introductions to the three volumes of Capital, published by Penguin in the 1970s.
He is considered one of the most important modern interpreters of Marx’s economic theory. According to Perry Anderson in his In the Tracks of Historical Materialism, Mandel was responsible for and authored “the first theoretical analysis of the global development of the capitalist mode of production since the Second World War, elaborated within the framework of classical Marxist categories.”
