Ernest Ezra Mandel (Frankfurt, April 5, 1923 – Brussels, July 20, 1995) was a German-born revolutionary and Marxist philosopher.

As a consequence of the rise of Nazism in Germany, his parents, Henri and Rosa Mandel—Jewish emigrants from Poland—were forced to move to Belgium. There, a few years later, the young Ernest joined the Revolutionary Communist League (Belgian section of the Fourth International). He finished his university studies and graduated from the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris in 1967. From then until his death in 1995, he carried out intense political activity within the international Trotskyist movement, becoming one of the most prominent revolutionary leaders and theorists of this organization worldwide.

Many of his scientific articles appeared signed under pseudonyms, until, with the publication of his book Marxist Economic Theory, published in France in 1962, he began to be recognized not only as a political figure, but as a Marxist thinker and theorist beyond the Franco-Belgian borders. A polyglot and tireless researcher, throughout his life he published around 2000 articles and nearly 30 books in German, Dutch, French, and English, which were in turn translated into numerous languages.

The fundamental core of his theoretical work is based on a non-dogmatic and humanistic reappropriation of the main postulates of the work of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. This is the case with works such as Marxist Economic Theory (France, 1962), The Formation of the Economic Thought of Karl Marx (1968), and the introductions to the three volumes of Das Kapital, published by Penguin in the 1970s.

He is considered one of the most important modern interpreters of Marx’s economic theory. According to Perry Anderson in his Considerations on Western Marxism, he was responsible for and author of the “first theoretical analysis of the global development of the capitalist mode of production since the Second World War, elaborated within the framework of the classical categories of Marxism.”
