Robert Francis Prevost, known to the world as Pope Leo XIV, assumed the papacy on May 8, 2025, becoming the 267th pontiff. He holds the distinction of being the first Pope born in the United States and the first from the Order of Saint Augustine.

His chosen papal name, Leo, is a tribute to Pope Leo XIII, who served from 1878 to 1903 and was a prominent advocate for labor rights.

Pope Leo XIV joined the Order of Saint Augustine as a friar in 1977 and was ordained a priest in 1982. Following a period of extensive missionary work in Peru, he was elevated to the rank of bishop and subsequently became a naturalized citizen of Peru. In 2023, he was named a cardinal by Pope Francis.
