What They're Saying
Critics Review
“Curious kids explore what makes capybaras so special—and learn that there’s so much more to these oversize rodents than their cute appearance… A visually delightful capybara primer best enjoyed as a read-aloud.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Ranging from short-lived animal fads to how capybaras interact in the wild, this text is dense with information that would be easily absorbed by emerging readers… readers will enjoy learning about all types of rodents through this book… This book will draw fans of capybaras and will serve as a great introduction to the graphic novel format.”—School Library Journal
“Back with another critter in his Giggle and Learn beginning comics series, McCloskey takes on capybaras with an entertaining mix of facts, narrative storytelling, and humor… Realistic yet cartoonish artwork depicts the world’s largest rodent residing in the wetlands of South America, as well as showing them in comical situations with narration provided by thought bubbles, providing an entertaining blend of the factual and the fanciful. Filled with lots of capybara facts, including a message that wild animals shouldn’t be kept as pets, this early reader comic is a great intro to a lesser-known mammal that’s currently having a moment.”—Booklist
“McCloskey’s signature gouache and ink artwork on recycled brown paper is visually pleasing, investing the big mammal with personality and detail. Speech balloons and captions make the variegated page designs fun to parse for information. Kids come away with an appreciation for an unusual wild animal that’s fun to learn about, but that is not pet material. ”—Youth Services Book Review
About The Author
Kevin McCloskey
Kevin McCloskey is the author of the critically acclaimed TOON Books Giggle and Learn series and a retired illustration professor at Pennsylvania’s Kutztown University. His first Giggle and Learn book, We Dig Worms, was described as “a winning combination of facts and gross-out fun” by the New York Times. His wife, a librarian, asked for a fun worm book to read at the library, so he came up with an informative and silly story that evolved into a now-beloved series.
