My Indigo World

Alongside Rosa’s true story, learn about the rich history of indigo, how indigo dye is made, and what indigo means to Rosa and her friends — plus much more. As well as sharing the love of indigo, the book also touches upon how indigo was “often fought over” and how it was a symbol of exploitation in the United States, noting the importance of remembering this “pain” alongside the “joy”. At the back of the book, young readers can learn more about indigo, as well as discover more information about the plant species, Jjok (sometimes known as Japanese indigo) at the centre of the story. There is also a section dedicated to making your own indigo dye and an “Indigo Shade Map” highlighting how indigo is used around the world. This is a beautifully illustrated book that honours heritage, celebrates indigo and is sure to inspire an appreciation of the craft.

Rosa Sung Ji Chang 장성지 is a Korean-born visual artist, natural indigo dyer, and storyteller based in New York and Baltimore. A graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and the School of Visual Arts, New York, Rosa has had work exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Paula Cooper Gallery, among many others. This is her debut picture book.
