About The Author

Fumiko Enchi

Fumiko Enchi, born Fumi Ueda, was a preeminent Japanese woman writer of the Showa period. Her first play, A Turbulent Night in Late Spring, achieved success at the Tsukiji Little Theatre. Her 1952 short story, Days of Hunger, garnered critical acclaim and won the Women Writers Prize.

In 1957, Enchi published The Waiting Years, a novel that took eight years to complete and earned her Japan’s highest literary award, the Noma Prize. She was recognized as a Person of Cultural Merit in 1979 and received the Order of Culture from the Japanese government in 1985. Shortly before her death in 1986, she was elected to the Japan Art Academy.
