About The Author
Vera Caspary
Vera Caspary was born in Chicago in November 1899. She began her working life as a stenographer at a Chicago advertising agency, but her ambition was to become a copywriter. Despite numerous obstacles in a male-dominated industry, she achieved this goal in 1920.
She subsequently relocated to New York to write for magazines and also commenced writing short stories that drew inspiration from her experiences as an independent, career-focused modern woman.
Caspary authored twenty-one novels throughout her career, including Bedelia (1945) and Stranger than Truth (1946). However, Laura, published in 1943, marked her first significant success. The novel was adapted into a film just a year later by Otto Preminger. The film adaptation is still celebrated as a classic of early noir cinema, and its theme music has become a jazz standard.
In addition to her novels, Caspary penned several successful screenplays and was honored with a Screen Writers Guild Award in 1957. In 1949, she married the producer Isadore Goldsmith, following a long-term affair. She faced scrutiny during the McCarthy era due to her communist sympathies. Caspary published her autobiography, The Secrets of Grown-ups, in 1976.
Vera Caspary passed away in June 1987.
