Kevin Smith
Kevin Patrick Smith is an American filmmaker, actor, comedian, comic book writer, author, YouTuber, and podcaster. He gained recognition with the low-budget comedy Clerks (1994), which he wrote, directed, co-produced, and starred in as Silent Bob, part of the stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob. Clerks received critical acclaim, including the “Award of the Youth” and the “Mercedes-Benz Award” at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival, the “Filmmakers Trophy” at the Sundance Film Festival, and three Independent Spirit Award nominations.
The characters Jay and Silent Bob have appeared in several of Smith’s subsequent films, including Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks II, and Jay and Silent Bob Reboot. These films are largely set in his home state of New Jersey and share a connected narrative universe known as the “View Askewniverse,” named after his production company, View Askew Productions.
Since 2011, Smith has focused on horror films, such as Red State (2011) and the “comedy horror films” Tusk (2014) and Yoga Hosers (2016). He also executive produced Masters of the Universe: Revelation for Netflix and is set to release Clerks III with Lionsgate.
Smith owns Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, a comic bookstore in Red Bank, New Jersey, which served as the backdrop for the reality television show Comic Book Men. As a podcaster, he co-hosts several shows on the SModcast Podcast Network, including SModcast, Fatman Beyond, and Hollywood Babble-On. He is also known for his extensive Q&A sessions, often filmed for DVD releases, starting with An Evening with Kevin Smith.
