David Michelinie

David Michelinie began his writing career on DC horror titles before moving to Marvel. There, he and co-writer/inker Bob Layton established key aspects of Iron Man’s character, including his battle with alcoholism, use of specialized armor variants, and vendetta against Doctor Doom, elements that continue to define the hero. Michelinie’s distinctive blend of action, suspense, and humor also distinguished Amazing Spider-Man. With artist Todd McFarlane, he introduced the formidable villain Venom and penned the first Venom limited series, Lethal Protector. Michelinie’s tenure as the regular writer for Amazing Spider-Man was the second longest in the title’s history, surpassed only by Stan Lee. He also contributed to tie-in titles such as Spectacular Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Spider-Man. Later, he transitioned from Marvel’s flagship characters to DC, writing for Action Comics, and subsequently returned to Iron Man for writing collaborations with Bob Layton on Iron Man: Legacy of Doom and Iron Man: The End.

Ann Nocenti

A journalist, editor, filmmaker, and more, Ann Nocenti has a substantial history in the comics industry as both a writer and editor. During her time as an editor at Marvel, she oversaw prominent titles like New Mutants and Uncanny X-Men. As a writer, Nocenti has worked for both Marvel (Longshot, Spectacular Spider-Man, Wolverine) and DC (Batman, Kid Eternity). She is perhaps most recognized for her groundbreaking run on Daredevil with artist John Romita Jr.

Tom DeFalco

Tom DeFalco’s early comic book scripts were for Archie and DC before he moved to Marvel. At Marvel, he wrote for titles such as Avengers and Machine Man, and launched the hit series Dazzler in the early 1980s. In addition to lengthy and acclaimed runs on Amazing Spider-Man and Thor, DeFalco served as an editor for numerous titles, eventually rising to the position of editor-in-chief. During the 1980s, he led the creative team responsible for the fictional biographies of G.I. Joe characters, which were originally included with Hasbro’s toys and later formed the basis for storylines in the animated series. Perhaps his most celebrated creation is the multi-title character Spider-Girl, whom he introduced in 1998. DeFalco has also authored several books, including the Ultimate Guides for Avengers, Fantastic Four, Hulk, and Spider-Man.

Cynthia Martin

Cynthia Martin is an artist who has penciled for Marvel Comics on titles such as Marvel Comics Presents, Midnight Sons Unlimited, and multiple Spider-Man series. She is particularly remembered for her notable work on Marvel’s long-running Star Wars tie-in series. At DC, she drew Wonder Woman and the related miniseries War of the Gods. Her work has also appeared in publications from AC, Eclipse, and First. Beyond comics, Martin has illustrated several Max Axiom, Super Scientist books, as well as “graphic biographies” for Capstone Press featuring figures like Jane Goodall, Helen Keller, and Sacagawea.

Alex Saviuk

Alex Saviuk established himself as a significant artist at Marvel with a seven-year tenure on Web of Spider-Man. He also contributed to the animated-series tie-in Spider-Man Adventures and drew the Amazing Spider-Man comic strip, working from scripts by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber. At DC, Saviuk both penciled and inked titles including Flash, Green Lantern, and Superman.

Todd McFarlane

Following a stint on Incredible Hulk with writer Peter David, Todd McFarlane moved to Amazing Spider-Man, where he and writer David Michelinie introduced the character Venom. Gaining a dedicated following for his innovative and experimental style, which featured unconventional panel layouts and extreme close-ups, McFarlane became both writer and artist on a new series titled Spider-Man. He later joined fellow industry talents to co-found Image Comics. McFarlane’s most significant creation is Spawn, a demonic mercenary whose debut issue achieved sales of 1.7 million copies, a benchmark for an independent comic. His other industry credits include DC’s Infinity Inc. and “Batman: Year Two” in Detective Comics. McFarlane has received the Inkpot Award, the National Cartoonists Society’s Award for Best Comic Book, and the NFL’s Artist of the Year Award for designing the Baltimore Ravens’ program covers. In addition to heading the Image subsidiary Todd McFarlane Productions, he also leads McFarlane Toys and Todd McFarlane Entertainment, and has produced a Spawn film and an award-winning animated series.
