Gruenwald also penned over one hundred issues of Captain America, multiple storylines for Marvel Two-in-One, and several miniseries, including Contest of Champions, Marvel’s first multi-hero saga. He delved into the Marvel Universe’s ancient history through a series of What If? backup stories, which he also penciled.

He was later promoted to editorial director of Marvel’s custom-publishing division, where he was instrumental in designing the company’s inaugural comic-book-style annual reports. Herdling’s writing career commenced with his work on Namor.
