Critics Review
“There are three great epic works in the English language prior to the twentieth century: the translations of Homer, Melville’s Moby Dick, and Kent’s Lectures on Homeopathic Philosophy.”

About The Author
James Tyler Kent
James Tyler Kent was a distinguished physician and author, born in Woodhull, New York, in 1849. He received his early education at Franklin Academy and earned his Ph.B. in 1868 and A.M. in 1870 from Madison University (now Colgate University).
Dr. Kent initially trained in medicine at the Eclectic Medical Institute in Cincinnati, graduating in 1871. He later received a diploma from the Homoeopathic Medical College of Missouri in St. Louis in 1889. He began his medical career in St. Louis as an eclectic physician, also contributing to eclectic medical journals and participating in the Eclectic National College.
A pivotal moment in his career occurred when his wife’s illness, unresponsive to eclectic or allopathic treatments, was successfully managed with homeopathic medicine. This led him to a deep study of homeopathic principles, culminating in his conversion to the school of homeopathy. He resigned from the Eclectic Medical Association in 1879.
Dr. Kent then held several academic positions within homeopathic institutions. He was Professor of Anatomy at the Homoeopathic Medical College of Missouri (1881-1883) and subsequently Professor of Materia Medica there (1883-1888). Later, he served as dean and professor of Materia Medica at the Post-Graduate School of Homoeopathics in Philadelphia, Dunham Medical College in Chicago, and Hering Medical College in Chicago. In 1905, he held the chair of Materia Medica at Hahnemann Medical College in Chicago.
For over thirty-five years, Dr. Kent was a prominent figure in the medical field, with more than twenty-five years dedicated to teaching and practicing under the law of similia. He is recognized as one of the most capable teachers and proponents of homeopathy in America. His significant contributions to homeopathic literature include his Repertory, Homeopathic Philosophy, and Lectures on Materia Medica.
He was an active member of professional organizations, including the Illinois State Homoeopathic Medical Society, the American Institute of Homoeopathy, and the International Hahnemannian Association. He also held an honorary corresponding membership in the British Homoeopathic Medical Society.
James Tyler Kent passed away on June 6, 1916, in Stevensville, Montana.
