Mel Hurtig
- Melvin Hurtig, OC was a publisher, political activist, and author.
- In 1956, he opened Hurtig Books in Edmonton, which became a hub for the literary community and grew into one of Canada’s largest retail book operations.
- Hurtig sold his stores in 1972 to focus on publishing Canadian books under Hurtig Publishers.
- He was recognized twice as Canadian Book Publisher of the Year (1975, 1981).
- His most significant achievements include conceiving and publishing two editions of The Canadian Encyclopedia (1985, 1988) and the Junior Encyclopedia of Canada (1990).
- He sold Hurtig Publishers to McClelland & Stewart in 1991.
