Lucy Maud Montgomery
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was born in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, and raised by her grandparents in nearby Cavendish. The Island’s landscapes, books, and her vivid imagination inspired a lifetime of storytelling. She was educated at Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Montgomery taught school before caring for her grandmother in Cavendish from 1898 to 1911. During this time, she also published poems and stories in Canadian and American magazines. Her first novel, Anne of Green Gables, was an immediate success. This was followed by seven more Anne novels, as well as other beloved classics such as Emily of New Moon and Pat of Silver Bush.
L. M. Montgomery died in Toronto in 1942. Her early years on Prince Edward Island inspired the delightful adventures of the impetuous redhead, Anne Shirley, a character Mark Twain called “the sweetest creation of child life yet written.”
