Summary

Edward loves his pet duck more than anything. He raised it from a baby, and now it follows him everywhere—even to the big fancy hotel in Memphis where he works with his father. Everyone at the Peabody loves to watch that little duck do tricks; why, it can even waddle up and down in time to a John Philip Sousa march, which is why Edward decides to name it John Philip.

But one day the hotel owner finds John Philip in his lobby fountain and he is NOT amused. Until Edward has an idea. Wha…

About The Author

Patricia Polacco

Born in Lansing, Michigan in 1944, Patricia Polacco spent her early childhood in Williamston and Union City, Michigan, on her grandparents’ farm. She describes this time as magical and her grandparents as inspirational figures in her life.

Her parents divorced when she was three, leading to school years spent with her mother and summers with her father, always cherished by her grandparents. These relationships deeply influenced her life and work, often featuring young characters interacting with the elderly.

After living in Oakland, California, for almost 37 years, Patricia Polacco returned to Union City, Michigan. As a child, she struggled with reading and math, not learning to read until almost 14 due to dyslexia. With the help of a dedicated teacher, she overcame this challenge and went on to excel in school.

She earned a degree in Fine Art, followed by a graduate degree and a Ph.D. in Art History. She worked restoring ancient art for museums and dedicated herself to raising her two children, Steven and Traci.

At 41, Patricia Polacco began writing children’s books, drawing on her artistic talents and family storytelling traditions. Raised on stories rather than television, she developed a rich imagination and a gift for storytelling.

Her books have garnered acclaim, and she attributes her ideas to her imagination, fueled by a childhood filled with stories. She encourages aspiring writers to listen to their inner voice and embrace their creativity.

Born Patricia Ann Barber to parents of Russian and Ukrainian descent on one side and Irish on the other, she also spent summers in her beloved Michigan.

Having studied in the United States and Australia, Patricia Polacco holds an M.F.A. and a Ph. D. in art history, specializing in Russian and Greek painting and iconographic history.

Now residing in Michigan on a farm built during Lincoln’s time, she also has plans to host writing seminars, storytelling festivals, and literature conferences.
