About The Author

Eric Carle

Eric Carle

Eric Carle is an acclaimed and beloved creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for very young children. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has endeared itself to millions of children worldwide, translated into over 25 languages and selling more than twelve million copies.

Born in Syracuse, New York, in 1929, Carle moved with his parents to Germany at age six, where he received his education, graduating from the prestigious Akademie der bildenden Kunste in Stuttgart. He returned to America in 1952, fulfilling a childhood dream, and began his career in New York as a graphic designer for The New York Times, later becoming an art director for an advertising agency.

Carle’s artistic career took off when educator and author Bill Martin Jr. saw a striking illustration Carle had created for an advertisement and asked him to illustrate his story, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? This collaboration became a children’s favorite and marked the beginning of Carle’s true calling. Soon after, he began writing his own stories, starting with 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo, followed by the classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

His art is instantly recognizable, created using a collage technique with hand-painted papers. He cuts and layers these papers to form vibrant and cheerful images. Many of his books feature interactive elements such as die-cut pages or sound effects, making them a tactile and playful experience for children. Carle receives hundreds of letters weekly from young admirers inspired by his work. He believes the appeal of his books lies in his intuitive understanding and respect for children, sharing their thoughts and emotions.

Carle’s stories often draw from his deep knowledge and love of nature, incorporating elements that encourage children to learn about the world around them. He aims to bridge the gap between home and school, addressing the anxieties children may feel about the unknown. Carle believes children are naturally creative and eager to learn, and his books seek to make learning a fascinating and fun experience.

Eric Carle has two grown children and, with his wife Barbara, lives in Northampton, Massachusetts, spending summers in the nearby Berkshire hills.
