Leo Lionni
Leo Lionni was an internationally known designer, illustrator, and graphic artist. Born in Holland, he lived in Italy until 1939, when he moved to the United States.
Lionni received the American Institute of Graphic Arts Gold Medal in 1984 and was posthumously honored with the Society of Illustrators’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. His picture books are renowned for their enduring moral themes, graphic simplicity, and brilliant use of collage. Among his notable works are four Caldecott Honor Books: Inch by Inch, Frederick, Swimmy, and Alexander and the Wind-Up Mouse.
The Chicago Tribune hailed him as “a master of the simple fable.” Leo Lionni died in 1999 at the age of 89.
