Janette Sebring Lowrey

About the Author

Janette Sebring Lowrey (1892-1986) was a Texan author primarily known for her young adult fiction published in the 1940s and 1950s. Her novel Margaret was adapted into the television serial Walt Disney Presents: Annette, which aired on The Mickey Mouse Club in 1958 and starred Annette Funicello. However, Lowrey is most widely recognized as the author of The Poky Little Puppy, one of the original twelve Little Golden Books launched in 1942. This book became an iconic bestseller, achieving the status of the bestselling picture book of all time.

About the Illustrator

Gustaf Tenggren (1896-1970) was a celebrated illustrator in his native Sweden before relocating to the United States in 1920. He illustrated numerous Golden Books, beginning with The Poky Little Puppy. This book, among the first twelve Little Golden Books published in 1942, went on to become the bestselling picture book of all time. Tenggren also illustrated other notable Little Golden Books such as The Saggy Baggy Elephant, The Shy Little Kitten, and Tawny Scrawny Lion. In the late 1930s, Tenggren contributed his talents to the Disney Studio, creating concept artwork for characters and scenes in films including Bambi, The Old Mill, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and Fantasia.
