Patricia Polacco is the recipient of over 75 awards and honors including the California Children’s Book Award, Parents Choice Award, Jefferson Cup Award, New York Times Pick of the Year, and the New York State Association of Educators and Librarians Best Book of the Year for Pink and Say, which has also received numerous state awards. Her book January’s Sparrow was a CBC Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People, an IRA Teachers Choice, and a Michigan Notable Book. She was also honored with Author of the Year 2004 from the Michigan Reading Association and The Golden Kite Award for Chicken Sunday, as well as Michigan Reading Association Notable Book for An Orange for Frankie.
Patricia Polacco
Patricia Ann Barber was born in Lansing, Michigan. Her family background includes Russian, Ukrainian, and Irish heritage. She spent her school years in Oakland, California, and her summers in Michigan.
Polacco describes her family members as exceptional storytellers, with her fondest memories being of gathering around a stove or open fire, sharing apples and popcorn while listening to stories of their homeland and past. She notes her family’s tenacity as traditionalists and sentimentalists, with stories growing richer with each retelling.
She pursued higher education in the United States and Australia, earning an M.F.A. and a Ph.D. in art history, with a specialization in Russian and Greek painting and iconographic history. She also serves as a museum consultant for icon restoration.
Through participation in writer and illustrator exchange programs, Polacco has traveled extensively in Russia and other former Soviet republics. She actively supports initiatives that foster Russo-American friendship and understanding. Additionally, she is deeply involved in U.S. inner-city projects focused on promoting peaceful conflict resolution and encouraging art and literacy programs.
Polacco is the mother of a son and a daughter and currently lives in Michigan on a historic farm dating back to the Lincoln era.
