About The Author

John Bunyan

John Bunyan (1628-1688)

John Bunyan was born in Elstow, a village near Bedford. After attending school in his village, he followed in his father’s footsteps and became a travelling brazier, or tinker. In 1644, he enlisted in the Parliamentary army and served in the garrison of Newport Pagnell until 1646.

He married in 1649 and had four children, though his first wife’s name is unknown. As part of her dowry, she brought two popular books of devotion. These books, along with a series of personal experiences, led to a profound conversion that was not fully realized until 1653, when Bunyan joined a separatist congregation in Bedford.

Soon after, Bunyan began preaching and engaging in theological debates with other religious groups. He published his first book, Some Gospel Truths Opened, in 1656. Following the Restoration, he was arrested for unlicensed preaching in the village of Lower Samsell. His refusal to cease preaching resulted in a twelve-year imprisonment in Bedford. His account of his trial was published posthumously in 1765. He was imprisoned again for approximately six months in 1676.

Despite his imprisonment, Bunyan continued to write and preach in Bedfordshire and London. In 1678, he published the first part of The Pilgrim’s Progress. It achieved immediate success, going through twelve editions and being translated into Dutch, French, and Welsh during his lifetime. Since then, it has been translated into over two hundred languages. Its companion work, The Life and Death of Mr Badman, was published in 1682 and is considered epic in scope. The second part of The Pilgrim’s Progress was released in 1684, partly in response to numerous imitations and unauthorized sequels. A Book for Boys and Girls, an early example of children’s literature, was published in 1686.

Bunyan died in 1688 from a fever contracted while riding from Reading to London to mediate a dispute between a father and son. He left behind a number of unpublished manuscripts, many of which were included in Charles Doe’s 1692 folio, which also contained the first brief biography of Bunyan.
