Description

This classic tale finds new life in Laughing Elephant’s seminal retelling.

Everyone knows the tale of the poor boy finds a magic lamp containing a genie and eventually marries a princess. The story was told by Scheherezade in One Thousand and One Nights. It has since been told in opera, film, and, of course, children’s picture books. Our version is adapted from C.H. Lawrence’s 1934 publication.

Aladdin’s story is beloved for its vivid imagery. This version retains C.H. Lawrence’s wonderful renderings of the cave with its jeweled walls, the all-powerful lamp, the genie’s sudden appearance, the Sultan’s court, the beautiful Princess, and more. The reworked text conveys the story’s potency and suspense, but has been simplified for younger readers to enjoy all on their own, or even read to their parents for a change!

With classic touches, beautiful illustrations, and quality text, this is a wonderful Aladdin for parents and children to share.

Critic Reviews

“Aladdin was an idle boy who lived in Persia with his poor widowed mother. One day a man stopped him in the street saying that he was his uncle, and they went for a long walk in the country This man was really a wicked magician. He put a ring on Aladdin's finger, and sent him down through the ground into the most wonderful cave, with beautiful halls and gardens all shining with precious stones. He was to look for a lamp which was burning in a niche in the wall. Aladdin soon found the lamp, and ran back to give it to his uncle. "Give me the lamp," said he, looking down. "No, no," cried Aladdin "help me out of the cave first, and then I will give you the lamp." This made the magician so angry that he said two magic words, and a stone flew to the mouth of the cave, shutting Aladdin inside. For three days the poor boy lay in the cave, starving, but luckily he happened to rub the lamp with his finger and Lo! A tall genie stood before him and said: "What do you wish? I am ready to obey you, for I am The Genie Of The Lamp." "Take me out of this place!" cried Aladdin. In a moment he was lifted out into the open air and he ran home as fast as he could.”
