This book shows the expanding field of Graphic design from 1900 right through 2020. It showcases visual rhymes between the versatile medium-independent visual production of today with historical counterparts that connect on the level of breakthrough insights and methods of working with the current visual works of the forerunners of graphic design.
Besides these visual rhymes the book offers text contributions by international authors who sketch a picture of the new fields of creativity that graphic designers will explore in the coming decade.
The Graphic Design Museum is the first museum in the world for graphic design. The museum is in the centre of Breda and exhibits the broad and dynamic area of graphic design. The Graphic Design Museum places current graphic design in an historical and cultural context, open to the world and technology. It represents all forms of media, from printed material to interactive web design. Graphic design has been around for about 100 years and has built up a rich tradition in the Netherlands with internationally renowned designers. In the twentieth century, graphic design was a fairly prescribed area with a small group of professional practitioners such as Piet Zwart, Willem Sandberg, Wim Crouwel and Anthon Beeke. The Graphic Design Museum offers an international podium for established designers and is, in addition, a platform for new top talent.
Sophie Krier lives and works in Rotterdam since her graduation from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 1999. Her work field is situated in the periphery of the design profession and includes activities such as teaching, writing, collecting, editing, experimenting.
Since 2005 Sophie Krier is head of the Design Lab department of the Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, where she has been teaching since 2002.From her personal studio Sophie Krier designs exhibitions (e.g. the Simply Droog retrospective exhibition), writes columns and essays (e.g. for the Premsela Foundation of Design) and studies social aspects of the design profession through self-initiated projects such as Nuits Blanches (about contact) and 5050 (about collaboration). Since 1999 Sophie Krier regularly realises small films (e.g. En Garde!, a miniature epos set in Asperen).
Current activities include: designing outdoor furniture for Studio Jurgen Bey, to be placed in Zaanstad on June 22; doing creative work for Nokia Finland; writing a research paper about the mechanisms of collaboration processes for the Professorship of Art and Public Space of the Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam; giving shape to this years graduation at Designlab.
