Description

Postmodernism is one of the most revolutionary and transformative ideological movements to emerge in the history of counseling and psychotherapy. However, descriptions of postmodernism are often abstract and philosophical, thereby making it difficult for practitioners to discern concrete ways that the ideology might enrich their ability to help clients. In Postmodern Perspectives on Contemporary Counseling Issues, contributions from expert scholars and practitionersclearly detail the implications of postmodern ideology for counseling practice. Contemporary issues such as trauma, addiction, social justice advocacy, couples counseling, and education areconceptualized within a postmodern context, and creative treatment options are illustrated with numerous case examples. Although the broad, conceptual details of postmodernism are reviewed, the primary focus of this text is on innovative ways to help clients with solution-focused, narrative, and other postmodern approaches. The rich descriptions of the implementation of postmodern approaches and techniques make it an invaluable training tool for supervisors and counselor educators. The book isalso ideal for counselors, psychotherapists, and other helping professionals who would like to bolster and enliven their practice with cutting-edge methods, tools, and techniques derived frompostmodern ideology.

Critic Reviews

“Winner of the 2019 Joe and Lucille Hollis Publication Award given by the AHC "This monograph is geared toward practicing counselors and counselors-in-training looking to become informed on postmodern counseling ideology and gain insight on how these frameworks, or a combination of them, can be of use when serving client populations." -- J. E. Perez, CHOICE "Impressive resource! As a counselor educator since 1992, I have not read a more practical and innovative book than Scholl and Hansen's. The book has robust teaching utility with practical clinical application. The contemporary clinical vignettes are highly relevant to counselors and the authors do a superb job describing innovative ways of interpreting, implementing, and using counseling approaches with clients presenting with diverse symptoms and concerns. Students and experienced counselors alike will like its readability and innovative way of presenting counseling approaches. " - Gerald A. Juhnke, The University of Texas at San Antonio "Postmodern thought and practice is alive and well in this book. It stands maturely on its own feet. The paradigm is clearly laid out and then pushed into a variety of contexts, some familiar and others fresh and creative. For a stance that values multiple voices, it is fitting that the book has many contributors. But it is still coherent, thanks to some strong consistent threads. " -John Winslade, PhD, Professor of Counseling at California State University, San Bernardino”
