PRODUCT INFORMATION

Description

Inspired by experience in the music industry and origins as an aspiring pop star, British artist Michael Gillette delivers his greatest hits, demos, and rare cuts of the past three decades in DRAWN IN STEREO. Showcasing pieces produced for Beastie Boys, Paul McCartney, MGMT, and Beck--among many others--DRAWN IN STEREO focuses on Gillette's ability to channel music into compelling visual art. Gillette shares a curated collection of artistic approaches, including installations, fashion sketches, music video animation stills, and magazine contributions for Spin and The New Yorker.

Filled with selections from more than 20 years of work created in Britain and America, DRAWN IN STEREO encompasses a wide spectrum of visual directions and celebrates many key projects. Featuring a foreword by Fred Deakin and interview by Elastica's Justine Frischmann, DRAWN IN STEREO reveals an inspired life, ranging from Britpop London and rooming with the Aphex Twin to a decade of creativity in San Francisco.

"Life needs a backbeat, and that rhythm needs some visuals. So, I'll keep sharpening the pencils, listening for the muse to sing me a new song." --Michael Gillette

Critic Reviews

“"British artist Michael Gillette's new monograph chronicles a career spent channeling music into seductive visual art." --Wallpaper "For Michael Gillette ... whose beautiful Drawn in Stereowas published last fall by AMMO Books, rock art encompasses a whole lot more than concert advertisements. Oh sure, Gillette has designed his share of rock posters, ... but he's also created animation for the Beastie Boys and My Morning Jacket, as well as portraits as diverse as Paul McCartney, Madonna, Jay-Z, and Pink.Drawn in Stereo delivers all of this prodigious output in a straightforward, unhurried manner, not unlike the artist's work." --Boing Boing "He may not be a household name but RC readers are very likely to have come across the work of British illustrator Michael Gillette at various points over the past two decades. ... Gillette's work, whatever the medium, has always been identifiably his. It's this shared aesthetic which makes this beautifully presented collection hang together. What's more, it's not only a real visual feast but there's an illuminating interview undertaken by Justine Frischmann and a short account from Gillette of his time in the early 90s with a certain Richard D James as a housemate that Aphex Twin fans will find particularly fascinating. ... Here we have a stunning career retrospective which keeps on giving." --Record Collector”
