About the Author

Howard Phillips Lovecraft, born in Providence, RI, in 1870, was a child prodigy, reciting poetry at the age of two and writing his own by six. His grandfather encouraged his reading and stirred HPL's interest in the weird by telling him his own original tales of Gothic horror. HPL was a sickly child, both physically and mentally and had a nervous breakdown in 1908. From 1917 until his untimely death at the age of 47 (of cancer and malnutrition) he produced many now-classic tales of horror.
