In this book, Hayek presents many of the figures that influenced the development of his economic thought. The articles range from well-known economists such as Mandeville, Hume, Smith, and Bastiat, to lesser-known figures such as Dupuit and Gossen, showing the breadth of Hayek's study of the history of economic thought.

F. A. Hayek, awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1974, was a pioneer in monetary theory and one of the principal proponents of the libertarian philosophy. This collection of 15 of his essays captures Hayek's views on political economy and economic history expressed in the writings of Mandeville, Hume, Cantillon, Adam Smith, and Henry Thornton. The essays, supplemented by editorial notes, provide an introduction to the historical context of political economy in Britain and the evolution of monetary practices. Five of the essays had never been published, and two others had never been available in English, when the first printing of the book was published in 1991.

F A Hayek (1899-1992) was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1974 and the Medal of Freedom in 1991 and was one of the leading Austrian economists and political philosophers of the twentieth century.
