About the Author

Carol A. Dahir, Ed.D., is a professor and the chair of the School Counseling Department at the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). In addition to working as an elementary teacher and middle school counselor, she spent 14 years as supervisor of school counseling programs and student support services. Since 1995, she has served as a consultant for numerous state departments of education, school systems, school counselor associations, and national organizations. As the project director for both the American School Counselor Association's National Standards and Planning for Life (career development), she has focused her writing, research, and presentations on excellence, accountability, and continuous improvement for school counselors. A past president of the New York State School Counselor Association, she served on the governing board for the American School Counselor Association as a vice president for postsecondary/supervisors and as North Atlantic Region trustee for the National Career Development Association. An accomplished national presenter, Dr. Dahir has delivered more than 300 workshops in 46 states and in 12 countries. She has authored more than 75 publications, as well as ASCA's Sharing the Vision: The National Standards for School Counseling Programs and Vision Into Action: Implementing the National Standards. She has collaborated with Dr. Carolyn Stone for three editions of School Counselor Accountability: A Measure of Student Success (2004, 2007, 2011). Carolyn Stone, Ed.D., is a professor of Counselor Educator at the University of North Florida, where she teaches and researches in the area of school counselors and accountability as well as school counselors negotiating the legal and ethical complications of working with minors in schools. Prior to becoming a counselor educator in 1995, Dr. Stone spent 22 years with Duval County Public Schools in Jacksonville, Florida, where she served as a middle school teacher, elementary and high school counselor, and supervisor of guidance for 225 counselors. She was the 2006 president of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) and is in her eleventh year as ASCA's ethics chair. In 2010, ASCA awarded Dr. Stone its highest honor--the Mary Gerke Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2012, she was awarded the Florida School Counselor's Association's Robert Myrick Lifetime Achievement Award. Dr. Stone is a past president of the Florida Counseling Association and the Florida Association of Counselor Educators and Supervisors. She has delivered more than 500 workshops in 50 states and 15 countries, and has authored three books and dozens of journal articles. Dr. Stone's professional path in elementary and high school counseling, middle school teaching, guidance supervision in a large urban school district, and counselor education has equipped her with firsthand experience and understanding of all facets of the professional world of school counselors.
