Includes extra material exclusive to Headline Review's edition The Nile Staff Review If you have never read Neil Gaiman, this is a good place to start. This, his first collection of short stories is full of good ideas written very well. In the introduction, he describes how he wrote each story, where the ideas came from, where he was in his life at the time. It also includes a slightly disturbing story called “The Wedding Present”. Standout stories for me were “Snow, Glass, Apples” which retells the Snow White tale from a different viewpoint with a dark twist. “Murder Mysteries” tells of an angel investigating a murder - the first - of another angel working on the concept of death during the creation of the universe. “The Price”, about a cat who fights a battle each night against a great evil to protect a family which is unaware of the cat’s efforts, struck a chord with me as a cat person. There are stories set in Lovecraft's Cthulu setting, “Shoggoth's Old Peculiar” is a gem, and there is poetry, there are dark tales and funny ones. It's a real mixed bag, but one of the best short story collections I've read. Matthew @ The Nile Read the rest of Matthew's reviews here. Author Biography Neil Gaiman was born in England but now lives in Minnesota, in a big house of uncertain location where he grows exotic pumpkins and accumulates computers and cats. |
