I know Mark has previously featured The Call of Cthulhu in his staff picks. But I recently 'acquired' his copy - and can assure you that his opinion of this book is spot on. This compilation features the masterworks of one of the most seminal (yet under appreciated) authors of the 21st century. Although the stories featured in this collection are not what you'd call lengthy (with a few lasting only several pages) the pulp format of Lovecraft's work is actually one of its greatest attributes. It doesn't take long to realise that each of these macabre tales is as well developed and well written as a fully fledged novel. An incredible book by an incredible author. Five stars. Author Biography Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1890, Lovecraft was self-educated and lived in his birthplace all his life, working as a freelance writer, journalist, and ghostwriter. Using many pen names, he contributed his supernatural/horror and science fiction/fantasy stories to various pulp magazines but his reputation as a writer rests mainly on the 60 or so stories he published in Weird Tales starting in 1923. He died in 1937. |
