Annotation
A novel about life and death, forgiveness and vengeance, memory and forgetting - but, above all, about finding light in the darkest of places.

Publisher Description
My name was Salmon, like the fish; first name, Susie. I was fourteen when I was murdered on December 6, 1973. My murderer was a man from our neighborhood. My mother liked his border flowers, and my father talked to him once about fertilizer. This is Susie Salmon. Watching from heaven, Susie sees her happy, suburban family devastated by her death, isolated even from one another as they each try to cope with their terrible loss alone. Over the years, her friends and siblings grow up, fall in love, do all the things she never had the chance to do herself. But life is not quite finished with Susie yet ..."The Lovely Bones" is a luminous and astonishing novel about life and death, forgiveness and vengeance, memory and forgetting - but, above all, about finding light in the darkest of places. 'Spare, beautiful and brutal prose ..."The Lovely Bones" is compulsive enough to read in a single sitting, brilliantly intelligent, elegantly constructed and ultimately intriguing.' - "The Times". 'Moving and compelling ...It will put an imperceptible but stealthily insistent hold on you.
I sat down in the morning to read the first couple of pages; five hours later, I was still there, book in hand, transfixed.' - Maggie O'Farrell, "Sunday Telegraph".

Author Biography

Customer Reviews

Coco's Review of The Lovely Bones
Very addictive novel. This book differs from most others with the point of view the author takes on. Susie watches from heaven as her family try to solve the mystery of her rape and murder. Some secrets from her life are revealed. A very memorable book. I would recommend this.

KR2's Review of The Lovely Bones
An excellent book totally unlike other books I've read. The first part of the book will leave any reader upset despite its matter-of-fact style of writing. I too can't wait to see Peter Jackson's interpretation. I would have thought this to be a very difficult book to adapt for film given how much is 'narrated' by Susie.

Chez's Review of The Lovely Bones
I too could not put this book down and have re-read it, adding it to my favourites collection. With the unusual perspective of a heavens-eye view of family life after the death of a child 'The Lovely Bones' definitely had my full attention from page 1. A compelling read - beautifully composed and written. Am also waiting in great anticipation for the Peter Jackson movie.

Kirstyfly's Review of The Lovely Bones
I had heard lots of people taking about how good this book was so had to read it for myself.

I was not disappointed the book was fantastic. I read it in one sitting while flying overseas and actually felt like I was in the book looking down upon the ground as talked about in the book.

Loved the way the book was narratored by the main character.

Alex's Review of The Lovely Bones
I agree with the other reviews, this book is unlike anything I have every read before - which is why it is such a hit. Cant wait to see the movie Peter Jackson is making it into. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Jenny W's Review of The Lovely Bones
Unusual point of view; the idea of having the narrator as one who has died makes this a tale with a difference. I loved it .

Natalya's Review of The Lovely Bones
The Lovely Bones was a moving and chilling story as Susie's family struggles to cope with the grief of losing her. It was beautifully written with compassion, and one feels a great sense of wonder at the idea of heaven portrayed by the author. I loved this book. One of my all time favourites.
